So what can you do about it, as a loving parent? Here's the (un)easy manual for small apartment cat care in Manhattan — whether you're in a UES walk-up, a West Village studio, or anywhere else in the city where square footage is as limited as amount of protein in your favorite ice cream.

Go Vertical: Maximizing Small Apartment Space for Cats

Cats need to climb and survey their territory. In a smaller footprint, that instinct doesn't go away. Instead if it's not realized it can lead to anxiety. Use wall-mounted shelves, window perches, or a tall cat tree. If your cat can't safely judge you from up-high, they might plot a bity revenge on the floor level.

Poor ventilation plus low-quality litter is a genuinely uncomfortable combination for a cat, and it's an easy thing to underestimate. Get fresh air circulating where you can, and don't be afraid to put an air purifier close to the litter box specifically — not just in the room generally.

Enrichment for Cats Without Outdoor Access

Let your cat actually experience a window view if you've got one. If you don't — a true air-shaft situation, no real view to speak of — a bird video from YouTube on your TV screen is a legitimate substitute. Maybe lower the brightness a bit before you hit play. And if it's safe to do so, letting your cat explore the hallway occasionally scratches an itch that a closed apartment door simply can't.
