You need to feel like the sitter you’re hiring feels trustworthy to you but ultimately it is about the trust that your cat will have in them. What does it mean in practice?

Look for a person that is calm and put together because your pet is an intuitive beast that can detect internal storms and get triggered by them. A cat being away from its owner is stressed in itself. They can’t tell the difference between being left for a limited period of time and being abandoned for life. It is heartbreaking but that’s the reality.
So the main assessment for a good sitter will be your gut feeling when you meet them. Your cat will also analyze your interactions with the potential sitter and label them as “safe” or “not safe”.
Before you set a meet & greet check the recommendations from previous clients. You want to look for clues like: the signs of consistency in playtime, how neat the apartment was after they left, frequency of updates, overall comments about smooth communication, intuition and curiosity in observing pet’s behaviour and asking additional questions to understand if something is “off”.
Last but not least, ask about the cancellation policy. Professional sitters are flexible but also need to protect their time because that translates directly into their peace of mind that your cat benefits from. Past a certain date cancellations are usually non-refundable due to the nature of the job - if a sitter commits to take care of your pet, they have to say “no” to other clients.
